Abortion: Pros and Cons

Created: 2008-10-10 00:06:33
Everything, that has man's life involved, turns to a highly disputable topic. Let's talk about abortion - even putting aside claims by abortion clinics and religious believers, and discussing only about women, their choices and rights, this topic is highly controversial.
Generators of majority of pros are pro-choicers, who believe, that abortion is morally permissible, and all women should have a right to choose and an absolute control over their fertility and pregnancy. They also claim, that in more complicated cases (rapes, health problems, inability to raise a child), legal abortion possibility is a must.
However, pro-lifers state, that fetuses and embryos, as human beings, also have their rights. Moreover, their right to live is more important than women's right to bodily autonomy. Opponents of abortion see it morally wrong not only because they consider it as a deliberate murder; but also because there are many women, who miscarriage or are infertile, therefore would happily adopt a baby. In case of abortion, these women lose the opportunity to adopt, and babies-abortion victims lose the opportunity to live and be happy.

Which side do you support? Should a miracle of birth be respected in any circumstances, or should abortion be considered an indisputable right of every woman?

Standing on Christian faith, the fallacy of choosing abortion in any case other than a doctor-patient choice of which life to save when that choice must be made, the basic error of pro-choice is assuming that "it is my body and I should be able to choose...". If you believe God's word, your body belongs to him, not you. If you read through His bible, you will find many examples of a life that today could easily have been aborted having affected the history of the human race.

um, well, that's just the point, isn't it? Not everyone believes in God, or your god specifically. Their god might be of a different opinion. And in a country founded on the concept of religious tolerance and freedom, it follows that practitioners of one faith should NOT impose their beliefs on others. That's why our forefathers left the old country.

Maybe we should examine why people feel the need to turn to abortion as an option. Maybe we should change our society to support people who have gotten pregnant when they don't feel they can offer a baby a good life. Maybe we should look at the reasons rape and incest exist and work to alter our culture so that men no longer feel the need to prey on women. Teen pregnancy is a reality -- and learning to accept that and work to reduce that problem in the real world seems a better use of our time, money and energy than railing against abortion.

Okay, what I see with this topic is.. If somebody is raped, and left pregnant.. What if they can't afford to give a baby all that it needs? What if they just simply can't afford to have a child because of the impact on their life? It wasn't like it was a consensual decision to fall pregnant..

People making a silly mistake, and accidentally falling pregnant.. Why bring a child in to the world, if they can't afford to raise it properly, or their situation doesn't pend for a child to be properly given what it needs and raised the way one should.. Why should this innocent child suffer it's whole life due to a silly mistake the parents made?

Yes they shouldn't have made the mistake, but in reality this is happening..

Sure, destroying a growing life IS terrible, I won't discount that, but having a child grow up in a household that can't properly support it, may stump it for life and cause so much more negative effect..

Human beings are more than tissue - more than cellular cytoplasm and intracellular matrix proteins. If a lump of goo is not yet sophisticated enough to form memories it is not a person, and it is a "life" only in the sense that the bacterial flora in my gut is life.

If you take a cell from an early embryo you can theoretically clone it and grow a new human so by the theory of "potential for human life" you would have two potential humans in your tube - identical twins. If you then reinsert the cell into the blastocyst it would likely continue to grow with with the rest of the cells into one person. You have changed two "potential humans" into one without killing a single cell. The confusion arises because we are assuming that cells and groups of cells have souls. That premise leads to the absurdity of being able to kill a "person" without killing a single cell of "their's".

Abortion is a choice, if women who are super Christian don't believe in it, then don't do it. For the rest, let them be. Also, contrary to what you may believe, the menstrual cycle is the natural way for a women to "abort" not having a child because no sperm fertilized the egg inside the female sex organs. Therefore the cell is excreted and dies. Checkmate.

Bizarrly, I voted pro choice when I'm actually pro life. The thing is though, there's no point in respecting the right to life if we're simply going to over populate the plane to the point where the ecosystems start working against us. So, I'm more pro-restranit at the moment :)

personally, i am pro-life. From what I have read, abortion is a soul-destroying and a tumultuous emotional journey for a woman, she is basically scarred for life.
Besides, abortion is unnatural, somethings happen for a reason and maybe the baby will grow into a wondrous person someday, he/she may give purpose and direction, afterall, in life and as humans we are not institutions and we are not islands.
We are stronger as families.
But having said that, abortion is tricky. It is as rick said, a choice. The choice, unfortunately is a very difficult one, but one that is of many factors.
So I am personally, pro-life, but having said that like many things in life, there are many grey spots and I suppose, hence the debate.

OK ...

No religion (EVER!) has ever set its followers free from the oppressions of the organized hierarchy of that religion (with the possible exception of the historical Jesus himself). Religion teaches unquestioning obedience. Religion is slavery. I oppose such slavery as earnestly and staunchly as my ancestors opposed the slave ships and the slave policies of the Confederacy.

I am not anti god (for one can hardly oppose something which does not exist). I simply wish to set people free from all forms of oppression and exploitation.

The ruling elite loves a population trained from birth to confuse beliefs with the real world. It is much easier to rule a population, pillage them with taxes, or send them off to fight a war, if the ruler is not required to prove the reality of his or her propositions and statements. This is why, since the dawn of civilizations, governments encourage their people to be ruled by beliefs and not by reason. It takes chains of steel to enslave a rational human, but all the rest may be enslaved by a belief.

Throughout history, a wide variety of religions worshiping Molech, Baal, Odin, Jupiter, Zeus, Ahura Mazda, Jehovah, Allah, Quetzalcoatl, Coatlicue, Vishna, and others far too numerous to elucidate here have come and gone.

The followers of each of these religions believed that theirs was the true faith and contained within it the correct answers to life's great questions. All too often followers of a faith were ever eager to cut the throats of those who disagreed with them.

But on many of the most basic aspects, mankind's multitude of religious thoughts contradict each other. On what would seem to be the most basic truth of all, just how many gods there are, the various religions throughout the world are in complete disagreement. It therefore follows that most of the world's religions, if indeed not all of them, do not have the correct answer to the basic question of how many gods there are. They cannot. For one to be correct means the others are incorrect. Yet the followers of each religion believe they are correct, even though this is impossible.

Ergo, belief that one is correct is not in and of itself proof that one actually is correct.

If one posits the existence of a god or gods able to communicate their presence to human minds, then as an inevitable result of the existence of that god or gods, it would be expected that all humans, or at least the priests who claim communications with the god(s), would have a unanimity of opinion as to how many gods there are.

Likewise, if one posits the existence of a god or gods able to communicate their existence to human minds, then as an inevitable result of the existence of that god or gods, able to communicate to human minds, all theologies would be in accord, and there would be no need for missionaries, let alone inquisitions and holy crusades.

But there is a diversity of opinions as to how many gods there are. And there are missionaries, crusades, the inquisition, and the burning of a million heretics.

The world is not as it would be if there was a god or gods which could communicate their existence to the minds of humankind. None of the conditions which must inevitably follow the existence of a god or gods able to communicate their existence to the minds of humankind can be found anywhere on Earth.

Quod Erat Demonstrandum, no such gods exist.

Hey Bluesman ... you are mistaken ... Jehovah has not come and gone. He's still here and will still be here when YOU have come and gone.

Point Jehovah.

To those who say that abortion does not take a human life I would ask: What sort of life does it take, then? If the fetus is seriously deformed, quite often the female body will self-abort. Why not let those who can live, do so?

Allow me to try to answer that. It is my opinion that we are a people without a conscience who view abortion as the simple correction of a 'mistake'. Barring forcible rape or similar travesty, we are then saying that it is okay to take a human life to cover up our own error ... and to avoid the consequences of our actions. ONLY by denying that the fetus is a human can the 'pro-choice' crowd justify such a lack of simple ethics.

Yeah, I believe in God. And I believe that there is a major smackdown imminent. But even if you do not believe in God, what sort of ethics allows the taking of a human life to cover over a 'trivial' mistake? Abortion is being used as 'retroactive birth control' and I resent my tax money funding what I see as casual murder of the innocent.

Hey Anon,

I don't believe in talking snakes, taking donkeys and talking bushes on fire, you demonstrably do (how odd!)

If what you say has *any* veracity you can *prove* it

Prove the existence of your imaginary friend using scientific proofs -that means no folklore, myths or legends

I have a $100 here says you can't (prove the existence of your "god" using ONLY sci9entifically established facts)

Looks like it's time to put up or shut up :-)

Someone said that abortion is "unnatural." Brushing your teeth is unnatural. Driving a car is unnatural. Taking any kind of medicine is unnatural; animals don't do it. If you have an attack of appendicitis, having an appendectomy is unnatural; "nature" would have you die. Turning on a light switch is unnatural.

Keeley (Tuesday, 11.11.08 @ 07:08am)
I am Pro-Choice.
Your body=your baby.

Why do people cry over a fetus when there are millions of children out there that are neglected, abused etc? People should start caring about the children that are ALIKE and BREATHING, before they weep over a fetus that is not even yet born.

A baby should be born because he/she was wanted. Although adoption can be a maybe, there are many unhappy foster children out there. Many who have not even gotten adopted.

Also, many people say "But what if Abe Lincoln's Mom have abortion?" or "What if Beetoveens's Mom had abortion?"
All I have to say to you is "What if Adolf Hitler's mom had abortion?"

Keeley (Tuesday, 11.11.08 @ 07:14am)
I am a faithful Christian, by the way.
But I don't think God would want us to give birth to a baby we did not want and that would only bring us unhappiness. A grown women deserves more rights and choice than a fetus.

crazee (Tuesday, 11.11.08 @ 16:02pm)
I dont believe in abortion, I would never have one myself. I only know of one person who had an abortion, and the only reason she had it was because she would have died if she had carried it full term. She regrets the abortion, but unfortunately it had to be done. She has four boys to raise.
I dont think abortion is right, but its the womens right to have one. If I didnt want to keep a child, then I would give the child up for adoption as long as they let me visit the child. A child(even unborn) should never be viewed as a mistake. There is only one reason why someone should have an abortion.

Kirsten (Tuesday, 11.25.08 @ 23:35pm)
I think abortion is wrong. It is murder and at three months the baby has all their senses. Murdering is a crime! Pro-Life all the Way!!!

Phil (Thursday, 01.8.09 @ 18:57pm)
Honestly, why do any of you care whether people have an abortion or not? I think it should be up to the person in question, the family, and the doctor. The government shouldn't care.

Adam (Tuesday, 02.24.09 @ 20:22pm)
ok...

abortion is not the only option for teen mothers. There is also adoption. There are plenty of families that would be happy to have the baby that you don't want. Some people cant produce life, let alone think of destroying it. And to say religion is slavery is the most ignorant sounding thing I think I have ever heard. If you have not put the time in to actually giving religion a chance, just like people who have abortions don't give babies the chance, then you have hardly any ground to stand on. And what about the babies choice? Whos to say what that baby will grow into. Even if the fetus is not technically a human being, it will eventually grow into a human being. Your are taking away this childs future.

Fetus (Tuesday, 02.24.09 @ 20:33pm)

Amber (Wednesday, 02.25.09 @ 02:18am)
No social issue in America since slavery has ever been as divisive as that of abortion. No issue brings out so much passion and hatred of the other side. Any court decisions related to abortion regularly bring protestors from both sides. Polls show Americans are split almost evenly on the issue. The issue has been recharged under the Bush administration. In Bush's first term, Congress passed a bill making third trimester abortions, or "partial birth abortions", illegal. Many of President Bush's judicial nominations have been thwarted by the Democrats usually for one reason and one reason only -- their stance on Roe vs. Wade, the controversial court decision that first made abortion legal. Which side is right? Are there any shades of gray in this dispute?

Abortion should be made illegal. It is a terrible thing to do. It is a form of murder and demeans the very value of human life. When a mother feels a kick in her stomach, she does not say “The fetus kicked!” or “The mass of cells kicked!” No, she says “The BABY kicked!” Why is abortion any different than killing any other person? The baby is a human being, just as everyone is. Abortion is wrong because the young mother is taking away a human life just because she is inconvenienced.

Jasmine (Wednesday, 02.17.10 @ 18:59pm)
I agree with KSC because i am also Christian but even at a non Christian look at it, it's still wrong to take away an innocent child's life-they didnt ask to be brought into this world and you just take their life away.
